Welcome to the Laboratory for Developmental Mechanics!

The Laboratory for Developmental Mechanics is in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Washington University in St. Louis.  The primary investigator is Larry Taber, The Dennis and Barbara Kessler Professor of Biomedical Engineering.

Our research centers primarily on determining the role that mechanics plays in form and function of developing tissues. The problems we address include cardiac development, growth and remodeling of blood vessels, and brain development. Our research is of fundamental importance to the field of tissue engineering, which deals with in vitro construction of replacement tissues. In our view, nature is the ultimate tissue engineer. Hence, devising methods for tissue engineering can benefit greatly from knowledge of how tissues form in their natural environment.
