Jay is a Professor in the Department of Energy, Environmental and Chemical Engineering (EECE) at Washington University in St. Louis (WUSTL). The Turner group focuses on air quality planning and management, and on green engineering including life cycle assessments for processes and products. Our work leans towards applied research with applications to the interface between engineering and policy, and also health effects of air pollution.
Our group is a member of the Center for Aerosol Science and Engineering at Washington University in St. Louis.

Pradeep Prathibha presented her research, on air pollutant attenuation by engineered vegetative buffers, at the Mid-American Environmental Engineering Conference hosted by the Missouri University of Science and Technology. July 2018... Pradeep Prathibha presented her research, on airborne manganese in a South African community, at the 19th International Conference on Heavy Metals in the Environment. She received a Graduate Student Award in recognition of delivering the 2nd best oral presentation. Congratulations, Pradeep!

August 2017... Jay Turner is co-advising a team of four students in the fall semester offering of the university's Sustainability Exchange course. Brenda Alvarado, Allie Lindstrom, Ann Smithson, and Haiyu Wan are conducting a life cycle assessment of synthetic reusable diapers. Dr. Becca Chibnall (Division of Dermatology, School of Medicine) is the lead advisor and Dr. Angela Hobson (Brown School, Social Work) is a co-advisor.
Summer 2017... Destiny Durante, Sam Lui and Bella Racette joined our lab for the summer. Destiny is an undergraduate student at Penn State University and joined us through the Leadership Alliance program. Sam is an undergraduate student at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology which is a partner in the McDonnell International Scholars Academy. Bella is a senior at Nerinx Hall High School in St. Louis.
Spring 2017... Jay Turner was profiled in the Faculty Feature section of the Spring 2017 issue of Engineering Momentum" (page 18). He also wrote the "Last Word" column which appears on page 37.
April 2017... Jay Turner recevied the EECE Department's Faculty Award for Outstanding Teaching.
April 2017... Jay Turner has been appointed Chair of the USEPA Science Advisory Board (SAB) committee convened to review "Screening Methodologies to Support Risk and Technology Reviews (RTR): A Case Study Analysis".
March 2017... Jay Turner has a Visiting Scholar appointment with the Atmospheric Chemistry Modeling Group at the John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, Harvard University. His appointment is at the invitation of Dr. Loretta Mickley.

August 2016... Jay Turner is advising a team of four undergraduate students in the fall semester offering of the university's Sustainability Exchange course. Scott Clayton, Isaiah Elder, Alexander McFadden, and Kinaan Patel are developing a greenhouse gas inventory for municipal operations in Granite City, Illinois.
June 2016... Jay Turner has been appointed Chair of Science and Technological Achievement Awards (STAA) Committee of the USEPA Science Advisory Board (SAB). Jay will chair the committee through 2018.
May 2016... Dr. Neil Feinberg received the 2nd place award in the Air & Waste Management Association 2015 Doctoral Dissertation competition (awarded June 2016).

November 2015... Jay Turner is the Scientific Partner for the American Geophsyical Union (AGU)'s Thriving Earth Exchange (TEX) Granite City (IL) project. ICLEI USA – Local Governments for Sustainability is also partnered.
November 2015... Neil Feinberg presented and successfully defended his Ph.D. dissertation research on November 12. He will graduate with a PhD EECE degree in December 2015.
November 2015... Jay Turner was an invited plenary session panelist on November 9 at the 2015 Louisville Sustainability Summit.
November 2015... Jay Turner was an invited speaker on November 8 at the Diabetes and Obesiy Center (DOC), Division of Cardiovascular Medicine, University of Louisville Medical School. His host was Dr. Aruni Bhatnagar, the Center Director. Jay spoke on "Environmental Monitoring & Modeling to Support Health Studies and a Case Study of a Residential Heating Stove Replacement Program in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia".

October 2015... Kelsey Haddad was one of fifteen Student Poster Awardeees at the 34th Annnual Conference of the American Association for Aerosol Research (AAAR). Kelsey's poster was titled "Nature and Sources of Measurement Error in the USEPA PM2.5 Chemical Speciation Network".
October 2015... Jay Turner completed his term as President of the American Association for Annual Research (AAAR), handing over the gavel to Dr. Sheryl Ehrman at the AAAR Business Meeting on October 14.
September 2015... Jay Turner presented an overview of Turner group research at the September 15 meeting of the St. Louis Section of the Air & Waste Management Association (A&WMA).
September 2015... Dishant Kharti is conducting a research rotation with us starting September 8. Dishant is a first-year doctoral student in EECE.
August 2015... Dan Giammar and Jay Turner have been named the 2015-2017 CIRCLE Faculty Fellows. A collaboration between Washington University STEM faculty, The Teaching Center, and the Center for the Integrative Research on Cognition, Learning and Education (CIRCLE), the fellowship is designed to cultivate scholarly teaching that spurs sustainable innovations in the university’s classrooms and curricula. Dan and Jay will be implementing active-learning pedagogies that can enhance student engagement and learning in the freshmen course EECE 101: Introduction to Energy, Environmental and Chemical Engineering.
June 2015... Li Du presented and successfully defended his Ph.D. dissertation research on June 10. He will graduate with a PhD EECE degree in August 2015.
May 2015... A series of reports from the project "Quantifying Aircraft Lead Emissions at Airports" have been published by the Airport Cooperative Research Program (ACRP) of the Transportaiton Research Board (TRB). Neil Feinberg's PhD research has contributed to these reports.
May 2015... Jay Turner presented on the Roxana Air Quality Study at the May 26 meeting of the Air Quality Advisory Committee (AQAC) of the East-West Gateway Council of Governments which is Metropolitan Planning Organization for the St. Louis area.
May 2015... Neil Feinberg presented on the ACRP 02-34 project at the 13th Meeting of the Aviation Emissions Characterization Roadmap sponsored by the Federal Aviation Administration ans the National Academies of Science, May 19-20.
May 2015... We hosted the St. Louis Area Air Monitoring Meeting on May 5. This annual meeting is organized by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources (MDNR) and brings together stakeholders engaged in air monitoring and data dissemination in the metropolitan St. Louis area. Li Du presented on the Roxana Air Quality Study and Jay Turner presented on an analysis of the MDNR real-time PM10 metals measurements in the City of St. Louis.
April 2015... Neil Feinberg presented on the ACRP 02-34 project at the American Association of Airport Executives (AAAE) Environmental Management Conference in New Orleans, April 20 -21.
March 2015... Kelsey Haddad presented and successfully defended her M.S. thesis research on March 5. She will graduate with an M.S. EECE degree in May 2015.
March 2015... Jay Turner traveled to India to deliver a series of workshops and a short course on ambient air monitoring. He was hosted by Dr. Prasad Modak (IL&FS) who co-taught with Jay. One-day worskhops were co-sponsored by IL&FS and the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (Mumbai), and by IL&FS and the Rajasthan Pollution Control Board (Jaipur). The two-day short course was organized and hosted by IL&FS (Mumbai).
December 2014... The following final report has been released: "Impact Evaluation Results of the MCA Mongolia Energy and Environment Project Energy-Efficient Stove Subsidy Program". This work was completed in collaboration with Social Impact, Inc., and Rufus Edwards (UC-Irvine). October 2014... We hosted Professor Alfred Wiedensohler for the EECE Department seminar on October 27. Ali is Department Head for Experimental Aerosol and Cloud Microphysics at the Leibniz Institute for Tropospheric Research, Leipzig, Germany. The following day Ali gave a tutorial "Quality-Assured Atmospheric Aerosol Measurements: Aerosol Sampling, Conditioning and Particle Size Spectrometers" which was attended by 38 students, research staff, and faculty!
October 2014... Jay Turner was installed as President of the American Association for Aerosol Research (AAAR) on October 22. This is a one-year term following previous one-year terms as Vice President-Elect and Vice President.
September 2014... We hosted Professor Charles Stanier for the EECE Department seminar on September 12. Charlie is an Associate Professor of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering at the University of Iowa.
