Bio

Dr. Butler's accomplishments and work experiences span multiple fields, including clinical practice, database management and business management. He has participated in the development, management and sale of healthcare and technology businesses. He has received approval for grants and written, published and edited in the fields of computerized medical databases and drug therapy. He designed the architecture of a drug interaction database now listed by the National Library of Medicine. He has participated in the creation and launch of dynamically created websites in a variety of fields. Dr. Butler currently teaches database management to graduate students and web development to undergraduate students at Washington University in St. Louis. He conducts research on information resources on the internet.

Professional Experience

2000-Present Manager, Engineering Web Services, Center for Engineering Computing, School of Engineering and Applied Science, Washington University in St. Louis. Responsible for consultation and creation of dynamically generated, multi-media, e-commerce websites with the BlueStream Web Development Group within the university, as well as teaching undergraduate Web Development and graduate Database Management Systems courses and participating in research projects in the School of Social Work. Sites include: The Spirit of Freedom Round-the-World balloon flight, Sever Graduate School Admissions Site, International Writers Center, School of Engineering and Department of Computer Science webs, and Department of Mechanical Engineering video streaming.  Served as mentor to several winners of the Olin Cup Entrepreneurial Competition within the Skandalaria Center for Entrepreurial Studies in the School of Business.

1998-2000 Clinical Program Management Director, yourPharmacy.com, Inc. division of Express Scripts, Inc. Part of initial management team that started, developed, established and then sold internet pharmacy to PlanetRx, Inc. for $700 million. Responsible for clinical content and operations on www.DrugDigest.org and pharmacist-in-charge for www.yourPharmacy.com operations. Led research and development on interactive website development using algorithms and probability assignment and analysis.

1996-1998 Vice-President, Healthcare Division, Concept 2000, LLC. Responsible for drug information, disease management and consumer healthcare software development. A start-up company producing CD-ROM- and Internet-based software for the telecommunications and healthcare industry. Completed market evaluation on drug identification/ information software application and collected images and information on over 2000 drug products.

1995-1996 Director, Electronic Products and Information Systems, Facts and Comparisons. Senior-level position responsible for creating, selling and supporting CliniSphere - a drug information software CD-ROM application; Drug Interaction Facts ? a drug interaction software program; and other drug information software products.

1994-1995 Chief Information Officer, Option Care, Inc. Senior-level position responsible for creating and managing national managed care database of case management services, conducting outcomes analyses on home care patient data, creating and selling a home infusion software application built on a relational database management system.

1991-1994 Director, Technology Information Service, University Hospital Consortium. Senior-level position managing a division serving 65 university hospitals around the country. Established, edited and published UHC Drug Monographs -a monthly series containing drug evaluations written by drug information pharmacists and physicians in UHC-member hospitals, and UHC Biotechnology Monitor ? a quarterly publication reporting on drugs in the development pipeline. Included work with computerized clinical outcomes research using large patient databases and publication of monographs on new biomedical technologies.

1986-1991 Director, IDIS, The University of Iowa College of Pharmacy. Responsible for administration, production, marketing, and sales of microfiche, online, and computerized database of biomedical literature containing over 400,000 records (200 megabytes) applicable to clinical articles on drug therapy. Product was sold in microfiche, online and CD-ROM formats to hospitals in over 60 countries on five continents.

1981-1986 Director, St. Louis Drug Information Center, St. Louis College of Pharmacy. Consulting with subscribing hospitals and pharmacies about drug-related questions and policy development. Developed and updated a database of drug interactions in the Illinois Formulary for the State of Illinois Department of Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities. Monitoring and advising on patient drug therapy, and providing phamacokinetic consults at The Jewish Hospital.

1980-1981 Post-Doctoral Residency in Ambulatory Care/Drug Information, City of Memphis Hospital and University of Tennessee Center for the Health Sciences.

Collegiate Teaching Experience

Washington University in St. Louis, 2000-Present. Affiliate Assistant Professor, Department of Computer Science and Engineering
Database Management Systems. Graduate course on database management systems and their uses for 40 computer science and biomedical students in Fall Semester. Includes group project creating a website for FDA Orange book information and an individual project analyzing FDA National Drug Code Directory database. 3-credit-hour course.

Web Development and Design. Undergraduate course to 50 students in Spring Semester, 3-credit-hour course.

Mentor, The Hatchery Program, Olin School of Business, 2001-Present. Assisting MBA students with the development of business plans and entrepreneurial activities necessary to launch early and intermediate start-up companies. First team advised won the Hatchery?s Olin Cup for best business plan for 2001 in the undergraduate division.
